The recent years have witnessed a rise in illiberalism across Europe, with a decline in ‘full democracies’ and a rise in ‘hybrid regimes’ or ‘authoritarian regimes’. Governments are increasingly undermining justice, press freedom, and civil society organizations, shifting towards the rule of force over the force of right. Many citizens, influenced by nationalist and authoritarian ideologies, fail to acknowledge the overall economic growth and reduced inequality achieved by these values.

As criticisms of globalism, liberalism, and democracy persist, it is crucial to safeguard these principles during turbulent times and prepare to avoid repeating past mistakes. Identifying common mistakes made by both the European Left and Right is essential to navigate the current challenges. Neglecting education, innovation, entrepreneurship, defense, energy supply, and industrial production are key areas where corrective actions are needed to ensure a sustainable future for Europe.
